J Mascis @ The Independent

I’m not the biggest fan of the guitar or J Mascis for that matter. But I love his latest album Several Shades of Why. I listened to it on a whim and it surprised the hell outta me. No feedback. No crazy guitars. Just J and his guitar singing some sweet, soft and almost fragile songs. Def not what I was expecting.

His show at The Independent was just as surprising. Again it was just J and his guitar. (Plus his many pedals & effects.) He started out with a couple of the new and old songs. And unlike his album, there was plenty of feedback & crazy guitar. But there was also that soft fragile side.

One of my fav parts of the show was this cover of Edie Brickell’s Circle.

Proving once again that you never know what to expect with J Mascis. But one thing is for certain. No one can make a guitar sound like he does.
